Grimsby Borough 3-2 Steels

Stocksbridge Park Steels couldn’t complete the comeback against Grimsby Borough.
Grimsby Borough started off as the better side. They could have had the lead within a few minutes when a long throw was heading into the goal, but that was ruled off due to a push on Luke Rawson. But they soon had their lead. Good passing play would eventually cut the Steels in half and Cameron Gardner took the opportunity by striking a volley into the bottom corner.
For a while, Stocksbridge struggled to get back into the game. But eventually, they grew into it and through a set piece they were able to get an equaliser. Luke Hogg sent in the corner and after it was headed into the air by a defender, Rawson was able to to move to the ball and head in. Liam Higton did think he had saved it, but he claimed the ball behind the line which gave the Steels the equaliser.
Stocksbridge felt like things would go their way in the second half, especially as within moments of the restart Jack Watson latched onto a Grimsby defence to go one-on-one only for Higton to make an impressive save. But, Grimsby would go down the other end and score. The Steels cleared a corner and it fell to Lewis Collins and he pushed forward with no defender coming out to stop him. He moved into the space and took the shot which made it into the bottom corner, giving Grimsby the lead again.
And Grimsby would be able to extend that lead. Gardner was causing problems again and lofted a cross into the box. Ben Townsend wasn’t able to get a clean pair of hands onto it and it spilled onto the far end of the six-yard box. Caine Winfarrah was there and he was able to tap in from the tight angle to make Grimsby more comfortable.
This goal seemed to shellshock Stocksbridge for a bit but they would get back into the game and get a goal. Charlie Oglesby sent a ball long and substitute Ollie Nowak got the beating of his man. He took the ball down well before smartly finishing past Higton. This set up a grandstand finish.
Stocksbridge could count themselves unlucky that they weren’t able to get a point out of this. They threw everything forward with Nowak playing with lots of confidence which was creating more opportunities. His low cross was almost turned in by Watson, but a trailing leg of Higton denied him. Grimsby were then able to hold on and stop any points returning to South Yorkshire.
