Steels 0-1 Consett

Stocksbridge Park Steels suffered their first loss in a month after a late penalty cost them against Consett.

Both teams were up for it in the first half with plenty on the line for both teams. However, it was the defences winning out as both sides were able to hold their shape well and prevent much breakthrough.

The biggest chance fell to Consett as they were able to cause a melee in the box where every player tried to swing their leg towards the to ball to either get it in, or get it away. Someone was able to fire a shot off, but there was a crucial block on the line and debutant goalkeeper George Wilson was able to grab the ball and come away with it. At the other end, Stocksbridge also came close with a long range effort from Kurtis Turner being just inches away from his effort hitting the back of the net.

The second half was a rougher affair as both teams looked to take advantage of mistakes. A Stocksbridge mistake at the back allowed Jake Orrell in, but Wilson made the save at the near post to prevent him score. At the other end, Elliot Owen showed very un-defender-like footwork to create space for himself but his shot was saved well by Harry Moss.

The crucial moment would come in stoppage time. A trip from Kurtis Turner would lead to a penalty, and Brandon Holdsworth’s strike from the spot was too much for Wilson even though he had guessed the right way.

Stocksbridge only had a few minutes to get something out of the match but their one big opportunity would be saved by Moss. Frustration erupted when Consett held the ball in the corner which led to Jack Tinker being sent off, ending the night in a disappointing manner.
