Steels 1-0 Ossett United

Stocksbridge Park Steels ended their goal drought and winless run in one fell swoop with a 1-0 win over Ossett United.

The first half was not the most memorable half in the world as both teams failed to bring much quality to the pitch. The Steels failed to have a single shot on goal, with Ossett’s defence holding firm. The Sheepicorns fared better at the other end, but there was still very little to raise the pulse in a first half forgotten as soon as the fans got in a queue for a pie.

Thankfully for everyone attending, the second half was much better with Stocksbridge starting to link up their passes far better in attacking areas. This led to one good move which meant Harrison Poulter had a chance from a tight angle, but Aleks Petrovic made a good save to deny the substitute.

The Steels though eventually ended their goal drought to the delight of the home fans. Kurtis Turner’s free kick caused all sorts of problems in the Ossett defence and they were unable to clear. Oliwier Grzelak got onto the ball and his initial efforts were blocked but on the third attempt, he hit it well enough no one was able to stop it and finally after 500+ minutes without a goal, the Steels had one.

Stocksbridge still looked good going forward, with Silas Valldolid-Collins forcing an impressive save from Petrovic when his cross almost found its way into the back of the net instead. However as the game got closer to the end, Ossett were starting to throw everything forward and they were able to force a reflex save from Ben Townsend and then from another set piece Ash Butterworth made a big block.

The Steels were able to hold on and claim their first three points since New Year’s Day.
