Stocksbridge Park Steels suffered last minute heartbreak in a 3-2 loss to Lincoln United.

The Steels had got off to a good start with Ify Ofoegbu causing problems down the right hand side. Tomas Poole and Luke Rawson linked up very well as well, leading to the former sending a dangerous cross in that missed Rawson but Alex O’Connor got onto the end of before slamming into the hoardings.

While Stocksbridge created the better opportunities, Lincoln weren’t out of the game and eventually it was the away side who were able to take the lead. It was really good football down the left hand side, mostly generated from Tobias Liversidge before the ball was slipped back to Matthew Cotton who stabbed home from close range to give the Whites the lead. Not long after this, Lincoln were almost two ahead but Harrison Davison-Hale made a fantastic save from Shaun Clarke.

With likely a ringing in the ears from Ian Richards, Stocksbridge started off as the better side in the second half. They were prevented from taking the lead just minutes in when Poole’s shot, which may have taken a bit of a touch from Rawson, was cleared off the line by Callum Foster.

That may have been the crucial moment in the game as Lincoln would double their lead. It was simple as you like, a route one ball which Cotton got onto the end of and finished for his second. It was frustratingly easy for the Whites.

Lincoln shut down the game for a while but in three minutes, Stocksbridge were back in it. Firstly, Ofoegbu earned a free kick on the right hand side. The initial free kick was headed out but Kurtis Turner slammed the ball hard and low, leaving an unsighted Jack Steggles with little chance. Then, moments later, brilliant football down the left eventually allowed an overlapping Jack Tinker to put a great cross in and substitute Lewis Macaskill was there at the far post to slam it in.

Unfortunately Stocksbridge were not able to take advantage of the momentum they had been given and instead it would be Lincoln who’d steal it at the end. The Steels were unable to clear a ball played into their six-yard area and after several bites at the cherry, Jake Park would knock it home to send the Whites home happy.
