Steels 6-0 Kiveton Miners Welfare

Stocksbridge Park Steels got their biggest win in three years to book their place in the next round of the Sheffield Senior Cup.

An initial bust of pace from Kiveton right at the beginning did show where their threat would be, but for the majority of the first half, Stocksbridge had most of the ball and all of the chances. They did struggle to take them though, with set pieces proving to be Kiveton’s undoing at the back. The corner was initially blocked on the line but Dan Hernandez was able to judge the bounce right and head in at the near post to get his first Stocksbridge goal.

Stocksbridge would have been frustrated not to have a second before the break and they did eventually get one. Another corner was whipped in and this time Alex Hardwick was there to head in, doubling the Steels lead.

In the second half while Kiveton were doing their best, the extra fitness of a Stocksbridge side three divisions above started to pay dividends for the home side. The game would truly be out of sight on the hour mark with Hardwick getting his second of the game with a strong finish.

Stocksbridge continued to get better as the game continued. Hernandez had already opened up his Stocksbridge account, and Ashley Butterworth wouldn’t be left out. So when a cross was put into the box and Butterworth was left unmarked, he duly headed to put Stocksbridge four up.

The game would continue and even though the Steels did miss a few chances, they were able to get a fifth. Substitute Joao Silva was able to jink his way through a few defenders before laying the ball off for Oliwier Grzelak who took a touch before slotting the ball into the back of an empty net.

The game would finish with some more chances, but the last goal would come when Silva was wrestled down to the ground in the box. Silva would then take the penalty himself, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and sealing a 6-0 win, matching the win they achieved over North Gawber Colliery in 2021.
