Steels Reserves 1-0 Sheffield City

Written by Dakir Thanveer

Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves began their Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League with a win, beating Sheffield City 1-0 at Bracken Moor on Saturday afternoon.

The Steels made a bright start to the game, seeing a significant amount of the ball and creating a few good chances with only the final touch lacking. John Hennessey was let down by his finishing on two occasions in the first half, while Bradley Adams had a shot saved.

Stocksbridge’s patience eventually paid dividends as they found a breakthrough just before the one-hour mark.

Hennessey dropped deep to get the ball and displayed a fine bit of football to head towards goal before playing the ball to Matthew Lee (on for Adams at half-time). A tidy touch and pass from Lee set Hennessey up to play a cut-back for Alex Cormack, who then turned the ball into the net.

While the Steels were solid at the back and were rarely under pressure, Ewan Oxborough was called into action on a few occasions, particularly in the 64th when the goalkeeper made a fine save to protect his side’s lead.

Despite being largely comfortable at the back, Stocksbridge had two heart-in-mouth moments towards the end with the visitors threatening to score. However, the team held on thanks to fine last-ditch defending, thus earning a deserving win.

The reserves return to League Cup action on Wednesday, 21st August.
