Wombwell Town 0-2 Steels

Stocksbridge Park Steels got their pre-season up and running with a 2-0 win over Wombwell Town.

The Steels had their goal within four minutes. Ollie Nowak’s initial cross was overhit, but Tommy Marshall chased it down on the right side. He then beat his man before playing the ball back to Daniel Hernandez, who simply knocked the ball home to give Stocksbridge a great start to their pre-season.

Stocksbridge continued to push, with the bar being rattled from a corner kick on one occasion, and they would be rewarded for it. Nowak was causing more problems and eventually attracted the ire of a Wombwell defender, whose sliding challenge took the young midfielder’s legs out. This lead to a penalty, which new signing Jack Haslam stepped up to take. Wombwell’s trialist goalkeeper did guess the right way, but Haslam was able to fire a powerful spot kick in anyway. Haslam would later go on to attempt an audacious volley from the corner of the box, but that potential goal of pre-season ended up going over.

In the second half, an entirely different eleven came out for the Steels. With Wombwell also making a lot of substitutions as the half progressed, it led to more typical pre-season fare. However, Stocksbridge did have some chances. Danny Deakin almost introduced himself to Stocksbridge fans in stunning fashion as his curling effort looked destined for the top corner, only for the goalkeeper to claw it over the bar. Alex O’Connor’s quality ball into the box was almost turned in by Luca Defalco, but his shot went agonisingly wide.

Unfortunately, the second half team couldn’t get a goal despite their hard work. But it would be minutes in the legs and a promising start to pre-season.
